There are two main types of file cabinets on the market. The traditional office file cabinets are called vertical file cabinets. These have anywhere from two to five drawers per cabinet. Letter and legal-sized files are stored facing the front of the drawers.

An alternate design is the lateral file cabinet. These lateral file cabinets are much wider than standard office file cabinets, allowing files to be stored front-to-back or side-to-side in the drawers. They also are not as deep as vertical file cabinets, letting them serve as wall partitions or credenzas.
